GIRLS DAY OUT ~ written by Joanne Faulkner
Back to 2004 RESULTS page

Track owner "Bullet" opened the gates to Western Speedway in the early afternoon for the JACK FM crew, which turned into GIRLS DAY OUT in the #55 Sprint Car! Claire Patterson and Erin Eastman from JACK FM were the bravest souls the Victoria radio station could drum up...rumour has it AJ and Crash had to stay home and wash their hair - or something like that.

Claire was first to test her driving skills, and after suiting up and getting a quick lesson from Jeff on starting, stopping, and safety precautions (close your eyes and pray!) the push-truck lined up and she started off like a pro. After a few test-laps to get used to the feel of the car, she recorded a 31 second lap.

After some helmet wrestling, and then a few words of wisdom from crew member Cam McLean, Erin was next to get out on the track. Although she is a self-proclaimed granny-driver on the streets of Victoria, she kept up with Claire's time and showed no fear.

My laps were slightly slower; my best time was 39 seconds around the track. It's not as easy as it looks out there! So much horsepower... and after watching Jeff put his "baby" together piece by piece over the winter there was no way I was going to risk breaking something (just ask him how often I do, and you'll understand). I putted around a few times, and then pulled into the pits. Although I had a blast, I think I'll stick to taking pictures of car, not driving it.

Jeff and Cam push Claire through the pit area.

With 20 more minutes left before official practice started at Western Speedway, Claire and Erin each went out on the track a second time. Feeling more confident about their abilities and the handling of the car, they each got into the mid-20's for lap time. Way to go!
