Last update: July16, 2006

APRIL 1, 2006 - MONROE WASHINGTON

The #10, #26, and #55 cars were all on the track to test their motors for the first race of the season. After witnessing sprint car driver Rory Price's fatal crash during practice on Friday night, the #55 team wasn't overly disappointed that the Saturday race was rained out. At this big fast track, anything can (and does) happen.

April 22, 2006 - POST FALLS, IDAHO

Jeff Bird’s long haul to get to the races in Idaho USA paid off on Saturday night at Stateline Speedway in Post Falls. In his first race of the season, with a fresh paint job courtesy of Rob Cardin Automotive, the Shawnigan Lake driver placed 2nd in the fast trophy dash, 2nd in the fast heat, and dashed to the front in the 20-lap Winged Sprint Car main event to take the win. Bird topped it off with a victory lap in the #55, sliding sideways with smoke pouring off the tires - an exciting highlight for the fans.

Bird, a veteran of open wheel sprint and midget racing in Canada, traveled overnight from the Island all the way to Idaho to compete in the Winged Sprint Car opener, also claiming fastest lap time of 12.65 seconds in qualifying. Bird’s crew - brother Jeremy Bird and dad Bobby Bird - were on hand for the exciting start to the season, helping make sure the car was in top form. This weekend will have Bird, along with his dad, and another crew member Wayne Campbell, traveling to Olympia Washington to drive a midget on Saturday night for Dick Voss of Auburn Washington. The following day, Bird will make the 6-hour trip to Ephreta Washington for the sprint car Northwest Cast Iron Nationals Sunday afternoon.
Stay tuned for the results.

MIDGET RACE - RAINED OUT

April 30, 2006 - EPHRETA, WASHINGTON

Another long trip, and another payoff for Jeff Bird and the #55 crew. After a rain-out the night before in Olympia, the Ephreta weather welcomed 18 Sprint cars for a hot afternoon of racing. Bird recorded 3rd fastest time with his limited WilRoc motor, and went on to win the Trophy dash. True to character, he gave away his trophy to one of the young fans wearing a #55 tattoo.

In an exciting 2nd place finish for the Heat race, passing the lap car, Bird went low while another sprint went high, for a crowd-pleasing edge of their seats display 3-wide around the last corner to the checkered flag.

With fellow racers Dan Fisher #10 and Cam McLean #26 on the track, the main event brought on overheating in the #55 engine. Bird came into the pits, quickly removed the radiator cover, and flew back out onto the track at the back of the line. Making his way back up through the field, and noting that he lapped Fisher and McLean more than once, he finished the Main event with an exciting 3rd place.

May 13, 2006 - ROSEBURG, OREGON

Jeff Bird, Cam McLean (#26), and Dan Fisher (#10) made the long trip from Vancouver Island to Roseburg Oregon. A record 29 Sprint cars entered the show on this baking hot Saturday afternoon for the NSRA/ASA 4th annual Don Hein Classic at Douglas County Speedway. With the high number of entries, the races were divided into four Heat races and two Main events, with only the top 20 cars going into the A Main highlight show. The top three from each Heat race were locked into the top 12 starting positions for the A Main event. The remaining cars ran a B Main event, where the top eight finishers in the 10-lap race advanced to the A Main.

Bird qualified 10th with a 13.10 lap time. Against the tough NSRA cars, on the wide high-banked track he secured a 3rd place finish in his Heat race, enough to get him directly into the A Main event. McLean was having difficulties with the set-up of his car, but he and Fisher still managed to get into the A Main as well after finishing in the top eight in the B Main event.

In the A Main, Bird started outside first row. The two front runners ran side by side for the first lap, then Bird moved back into second position. With a yellow caution flag on lap two, Bird was able to use the single file restart to his advantage. As the lead car blocked the bottom of the corner going into turn one, the third place car was about to move up. Bird made a pass 3-wide outside along the wall to take the lead, a daring move that had brother Jeremy planning for repairs to the #55. From there, Bird led for 10 laps until encountering lapped traffic and finally being caught by the NSRA high priced, horse-powered cars. Despite his limited WilRoc among a field of NSRA power, Bird finished the 40-lap event in 3rd place. It's a finish Bird says is "as good as winning the Strawberry Cup."
The next two weekends will see Bird headed to Southsound Speedway in Washington for another NSRA event, and then a WMRA midget race in Wenatchee.

May 20, 2006 - OLYMPIA, WASHINGTON

Compared to past weekends, it was just a quick trip over the border to Olympia for the #55 team, traveling again with the two other WilRoc cars, #10 Dan Fisher from Cobble Hill and #26 Cam McLean from Duncan. There were 20 sprint cars entered for the Southsound Speedway show, 17 of them with high powered NSRA engines.

Bird's qualifying time beat the previous track record, coming in at 12.5. Dan Fisher (#10) beat not only the old track record, but Bird's new record, as well as the official WilRoc record at that track, with a 12.10. Fisher's glory was short lived - he rubbed the wall twice during the main event and finished 11th. McLean's set-up of the car was giving him some grief and he was lapped by Bird and finished 14th.

After finishing 2nd in the Heat race, Bird's main event finish in 4th put him into 2nd place overall in NSRA point standings!
Pretty good for a limited WilRoc motor. ;)

July 15, 2006 - VICTORIA, BC

VICTORY LANE - HOW SWEET IT IS!!

Jeff Bird takes the main event!!
In his first race of the 2006 season at "home" in Victoria, the "Canadian Outlaw" steals the show by jumping from the 3rd row into the lead by lap 10. With two yellows allowing traffic behind him to catch up, Bird lapped a few stragglers and maintained his lead for the remainder of the 50 lap main event. Bird also qualified 5th fastest time, and placed 3rd in the Heat Race earlier in the evening.

Thanks to the crew on hand for this gratifying win: Cam McLean, Rob Cardin, Jeremy Bird, and Ian Fraser.

Dan Fisher (out for the night with engine failure in his #10) was also instrumental in assisting with an adjustment to the #55 rear end on the front stretch just before the driver introductions. Thanks everyone for your great teamwork! And thanks to Rob & Charmaine, Kevin & Susan, Don, Joanne, & Tanner, and other friends and family for being there!
